Black Forest Cake

I have researched for several weeks on the proper way to make this cake. Let me just say its amazing how many versions there are. What we have here is an American adaption of a German Black Forest Cherry Torte. I don't believe they added chocolate ganache-I did and I liked it :)

Typically this is a 3-4 layer devils food cake that has a splash of cherry liqueur not only for taste but to keep the cake moist. Whipped cream  covers the cake and in between the layers cake. I used canned pitted tart  cherries along with the the whipped cream filling. To me this adds a nice texture and extra flavor

I made this cake with cherry juice from maraschino cherries, the juice from canned tart cherry's and with  Kirschwasser Liqueur  (a German cherry liqueur). I have to say that if you can find the liqueur try it.
All are equally tasty but the liquer just adds something special.
On another note about the Kirshwasser not every liqueur store carry's it so you may have to call around.

For a little decoration I added shaved chocolate and chocolate ganache shells on the bottom. And of course some of the maraschino cherries on top.
Enjoy :)

Chocolate Sundae Cupcakes

OK so in preparation for making a Black forest Cake I had some left over batter and decided to make these cute sundae cupcakes for my kids as an afternoon snack. Yes I know they should be eating granola and berries. I suppose the Maraschino Cherry on top doesn't count. Not much nutritional value in that. Oh Well! Next time I'll try something healthier :)

Your favorite cupcake mix
Whipped Cream
Hershey's syrup
How simple. I'm sure sprinkles on top or Ganache in the center might put it over the top.  Yummy!

My test run of the Black Forest Cake...

Not too bad.. But I have to show you this gorgeous cake stand my sister got me for Christmas a few years ago. Yes it is that beautiful (To me anyway ;))
Would love to hear some thoughts..

Sugar Cookie Hearts

I love all the creative ways you can decorate a simple sugar cookie. By using Royal icing you can design your own masterpiece..

Bake your favorite sugar cookie recipe

Royal icing
4 Cups Powdered Sugar
3-4 Tablespoons cold water
3 Tablespoons Meringue power - you can find this at specialty stores such as Micheal's. I think Walmart may ever carry it.

I divide the icing into small bowls about 1/2 cup in each. Add a few drops of  food coloring mix well so you don't get streaks. You may have to more drops until you get the color you want.

I use disposable piping bags with a #3 tip but you can use what you are comfortable with. Just snipping a small hole in the piping bag will do.

I like working with Royal icing. You can be very creative or very simple in your designs and it always seems to come out looking pretty good.  These are also fun to do with the kids. Let them show off their creative side too.

Another take on the sugar cookie cut out. Chocolate filled Hearts.
